The early years sector is now starting to make strides in eco-sustainability – and Nursery World is striving to do its bit too

Nursery World was contacted by a nursery recently to say that it was hoping to achieve plastic-free status. As part of this, the children were asked to find examples of plastic around the nursery – unfortunately, one miscreant that they spotted was Nursery World magazine in its plastic wrapper!

This is an issue that our publishing company has been looking at for some time, of course, and we’re delighted to say that we should now be being delivered to you in a paper wrapper.

Eco-sustainability has been well and truly taken up by the early years sector, not surprisingly when the future of the young citizens that providers educate and care for is at stake.

There is so much interesting work going on in this area, some of which was highlighted at the GECCO Early Years Eco-Sustainability conference which ran at the Nursery World Show 2020 on 8 February.

GECCO was set up by Tops Day Nurseries managing director Cheryl Hadland, who has led the way for the UK early years sector on going green. The conference was booked out and is being repeated at Nursery World North in April.

You can read our interview with Cheryl on page 11. Her call for sustainability to be included in the revised Early Years Foundation Stage is surely one that should be heeded.

To recognise the importance of green issues and the progress that is being made by early years settings, we have included a new category in the 2020 Nursery World Awards – the Eco-Friendly Early Years Award.

We’d love to hear what you are doing to involve parents and children in the drive for sustainability and how you are changing the way you operate your setting.
