Nursery World Awards 2011: Organisations - Nursery of the year

Provision
WINNER: Children's House Nursery School, Bow, London

It has been very difficult to make the decision on a single winner this year, but Children's House Nursery School in Bow, east London, deserves the award because of the particular quality of its relationship with parents. Its sensitive and responsive work with children is informed and magnified by its outreach to families.

The judging visit took place on the first day of term, but many parents whose children had left for primary school came in to explain what the nursery means to them. A fathers' group has recently built planters and seats, incorporating the children's ideas, and displays around the school include beautiful embroidery done by a group of mothers. Space in the three-storey listed building is dedicated to informal drop-in sessions and also to popular classes for parents that are very well attended.

The head and staff are always available, and have succeeded in convincing the parents of the value and effectiveness of their approach to learning. This has transformed life for families in the local community, where many children come to school with little spoken English.

The head's vision is shared by the team of well-qualified and dedicated staff, who have almost all worked at Children's House for many years. They have established a stimulating and well-organised learning environment with considerable care and imagination. Teams of staff from both rooms are based outdoors on a weekly basis. Children's independence is encouraged through the accessible and consistent organisation of a wide and stimulating range of resources. They have genuine choices, and staff take children's ideas seriously, extending their individual interests.

A breakfast club is available from 8am and many activities are on offer after school. Children have opportunities to go ice skating and swimming, and to participate in movement and musical sessions. The nursery has recently received an award from the local authority for the quality of its extended school provision.

There are thoughtful plans for future development, building on recent years of improvement and backed by energetic fund raising. Coupled with this is serious charitable work, and a link with a school in Bangladesh.

Children's House Nursery School is an inspiring place to be. The nursery makes a powerful contribution to the physical, emotional, social, intellectual and spiritual wellbeing of parents as well as their children.

HIGHLY COMMENDED

Red Hen Day Nursery, Louth, Lincolnshire

It is hard to envisage a more idyllic 'free range' setting for young children, imaginatively converted and continuously improved by the family whose initiative, which started as a diversification from farming, has become a way of life. The rich provision is underpinned by firm principles and influences children's learning profoundly, particularly encouraging their independence, sense of responsibility, engagement with the natural world, and creativity.

The stimulating environment promotes enquiry and adventure, balanced by familiar routines and excellent individual support for all involved. Children make notable progress in all aspects of their development, and staff are also encouraged to grow professionally and personally.
