Project: Outline journeys, part 1 - Ticket to ride

Practice
Launch children on a journey by train, bus, car and storybook with activities in the first of a two-part project by early years adviser Judith Stevens.

Journeys make a wonderful topic for young children, building on their interest in making sense of the world around them. The theme gives children opportunities to explore aspects of all six areas of learning and development, in particular the 'place' aspect of 'knowledge and understanding of the world' (see box).

It is important that practitioners 'start where the children are' when planning. In this case, most children's experiences will include journeys to and from the setting (on foot or by car or public transport), around the setting (from room to room, indoors and outdoors) and in the local and wider environment.

Any project should reflect the interests and learning needs of children in the group. By providing stimulating and challenging experiences that promote children's imagination and curiosity, practitioners can engage all children in this popular theme. Books and stories are always a good way to promote discussion and extend children's learning, so high-quality texts are suggested throughout the theme.
