Reviews: ASD strategies

Training early years workers is key to inclusion for children with autism. Karen Faux reports.

Funding from Children in Need is enabling Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin, the main provider of Welsh-medium early years care and education in the voluntary sector, to deliver much-needed training in autism to playgroup leaders across its 500 member groups.

Sian Owen, director for inclusion at MYM, believes this training is vital to ensure that children with autism are given every opportunity to be included in play and activities tailored to their needs, from the earliest possible age.

'The aim of this project is to offer training, support and resources to playgroup leaders that will increase awareness and understanding of children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders,' she says. 'We see the training days as the beginning of an ongoing process whereby the playgroup leaders can feed back the information to the other staff.'
