Training: Infant mental health - Knowing you

A course promoting early emotional development takes students from many professional backgrounds, as Sue Sillitoe explains.

The Early Years Foundation Stage document says that babies and children achieve emotional wellbeing when their needs are met and their feelings accepted.

Practitioners recognise that they have a vital role to play in this process, particularly in promoting children's well-being through close, supportive relationships.

In order to explore this area in depth, the London-based Tavistock Clinic has teamed up with the University of East London to offer a course which is being described by its participants as 'incredibly powerful'.

The two-year course, Infant Mental Health, aims to help professionals gain an increased understanding of the factors that promote healthy emotional development in infants and pre-school-age children. It also aims to foster understanding of the psychological problems that can affect children and their families and to enhance professional, observational and therapeutic skills.
