Work matters: Management Focus - Extending play

Management
Staff both new and experienced are finding fresh inspiration for practice on a nursery chain's in-house course. Karen Faux reports.

Keeping a fresh and imaginative approach to play is a priority for the nine-strong nursery group, Early Years Childcare, and its in-house course, 'Inspirational Play Training', is doing exactly what its title purports.

The training focuses on the three key areas of storytelling, outdoor and small-world play. Invitations to the course were designed by the nursery children and a lot of thought went into presenting it as something that would be stimulating for both new staff and those who were experienced.

Marketing manager Tamara Mansfield Kerr says, 'We've had a tier of staff coming in for the training with the aim that they then pass on what they've learned to all their colleagues. Each session lasts for a day and involves taking away notes and completing homework, which helps to track the impact of the course on practice.'
