Speaking at the EYP national event in Birmingham last week, ASPECT's general secretary John Chowcat urged delegates to stand up for pay and status.
'CWDC has done a good job in building the EYP workforce at record speed, but currently a voice is missing,' he said. 'A national pay framework is needed and an entitlement to continuing professional development - just like other professions.'
He suggested a systematic process of using a portfolio approach and building up a record of work experience and training. 'An encouraging fact is that the CWDC, the DCSF and Ofsted are all willing to enter into a dialogue with the sector and work on ways to increase status and ongoing training. EYPs themselves must also find ways to work towards this.'
