Work Matters: Progress report

Julie Cowell, who is a senior room supervisor at Asquith's Trafalgar Nursery in Richmond, joined with an NNEB in 2004.

She progressed to an NVQ level 4 and is now doing a foundation degree through the Open University.

'Asquith gave me the opportunity to do the level 4 in-house and I am now hoping that eventually I can go on to do a full degree and maybe a PGCE,' she says. 'There are a few other people in Asquith who are at the same stage as myself, and we go to each other for help.'

Ms Cowell says that in-house courses are well organised and integrated into practice. 'Last week a trainer visited us for the day to help us with managing junior staff, and tomorrow we have a one-day course on the EYFS. For anyone joining the company at level one there are lots of opportunities to undertake qualifications and move up.'
