26m for Bookstart

A charity that provides free books to children is to benefit from 26m of Government funding over the next three years, children's secretary Ed Balls announced on Monday.

The funding will provide 12 million free books for children from birthto three through the Bookstart scheme, operated by the charityBooktrust. The books, which are split into packs of two for babies,toddlers and pre-schoolers, will be distributed in GP surgeries,libraries and early years settings. Two other schemes operated byBooktrust that provide free books for older children, called Booktimeand Booked Up, will also benefit from the funding. Early years settingsaround the country will be joining events for National Bookstart Day on9 October (see feature, p20).
