4.5m boost for nurseries

Neighbourhood Nurseries received a boost in funding last week with 4.5m more from the New Opportunities Fund. The award, which will create 43 more Neighbourhood Nurseries in England, includes Pounds 224,300 for a 60-place nursery in the London borough of Newham. The nursery, due to open in April, will be part of the East London Childcare Institute, a project to house childcare, early years training and business development under one roof.

The award, which will create 43 more Neighbourhood Nurseries in England, includes 224,300 for a 60-place nursery in the London borough of Newham. The nursery, due to open in April, will be part of the East London Childcare Institute, a project to house childcare, early years training and business development under one roof.

The Institute will provide training in early years and childcare qualifications and offer courses in professional development for people already working in the sector. Christine Leigh, chief executive of Newham Training and Education Centre, said, 'Without the award we could not build and equip this nursery, and many local lone parents and low-income families would have missed out on the opportunity to access qualifications and employment.'
