Little Baa by Kim Lewis (Walker Books, 9.99) is a heart-warming story and an ideal stimulus to explore spring.
In the story, Little Baa wanders off alone and, feeling tired, settles down for a nap in a hollow. His mother starts a frantic search to find him when she realises he has disappeared, but the two are only reunited with the help of the shepherd and his collie.
The book is wonderfully accurate both visually and in its observations of animal behaviour - ewes do, indeed, stamp their feet to ward off possible threats to their lambs. Children growing up in the countryside will enjoy the familiarity of the detailed scenes, while city children will gain a real insight into farm animals and country life in spring time.
