A parent's guide to information and communications technology

ICT is increasingly becoming part of our everyday life, and to be able to use it competently in adulthood is now vital. The introduction of ICT in the Foundation Stage is a recognition of this and the aim is to get children used to using equipment such as telephones, tape recorders and computers so that they will not be dogged by the techno-fear that inhibits so many adults. What will my child be doing with ICT?

ICT in the Foundation Stage is in the area of learning 'Knowledge and understanding of the world' (see the parent's guide last month on 19 September). Nursery children are usually introduced to ICT by using programmable toys, such as remote controlled cars or robots, or by playing imaginary games with telephones and computers. Nursery staff may also point out ICT to them on an outing to the local shops where they can see traffic lights, cash machines, scanners at pay points in supermarkets, lottery ticket dispensers, satellite dishes, public telephones and intruder alarms.
