Karen and her co-author Louise Sheppard both work in human resources and personnel businesses, as well as having employed their share of nannies, so they have plenty of professional experience of interviewing job candidates and giving employment advice. When told that nannies found some guidebooks 'out of date', she agreed, and said that when she and Louise decided to write their book, this was one of the things that motivated them.
'Some books are downright disrespectful of nannies,' she says. 'If you're going to hire a nanny and hold interviews, that's a strange place to start!' Karen says she and Louise 'wanted nannies to be comfortable with the book', although really it is written for employers. Large portions of it are devoted to the emotional and psychological sides of the employer-nanny relationship, with a constant emphasis on communication and mutual respect.
