It was coming into contact with a child physician when my own first baby became ill that inspired me to move from adult medicine into the children's field. Although the illness had a trivial impact on my daughter, it was the way she was cared for holistically that made a lasting impression on me.

That holistic concept is now evident, many years later, in the development of the National Service Framework. As the first national clinical director for children (NCD), I led the team which put the framework together. This places the child at the centre of services, looks at the whole child and follows a needs-based approach. The underpinning idea is one of a journey, starting with practitioners asking, why is the child here? What will be the milestones? What are the needs of the child?
