Analysis: An attractive option?

Now that Early Years Professional Status is up and running, childcarers who have a degree in Early Childhood Studies are considering how it might enhance their careers, says Karen Faux.

Early Years Professional Status may seem a natural complement to the established Early Childhood Studies (ECS) degree, but there are still some question marks hanging over the relationship between the two and how they stack up in terms of career prospects.

Those who achieved their degree a while ago and who are working in early years may well be asking themselves whether it is necessary for them to undertake EYP. Not all may have the time or inclination to do so.

The ECS was launched in 1993 and since then has steadily gained in popularity. In 1998 the Childcare Strategy provided greater impetus for its development, and at this time it also became accepted as a route to the PGCE.
