Angry staff poised for strike action

Nursery workers were due to hold a one-day strike this week in support of a fair pay and grading claim against Ealing Council in west London. As Nursery World went to press, the strike was expected to take place on Wednesday 6 June, with all four council nurseries closing - Disraeli, Hanbury, Hanwell and Windmill.

As Nursery World went to press, the strike was expected to take place on Wednesday 6 June, with all four council nurseries closing - Disraeli, Hanbury, Hanwell and Windmill.

All but one of the 46 staff are women and have been undertaking new responsibilities since a reorganisation in 1996. Their pay has not been reviewed in more than 11 years and public service union Unison has accused the council of reneging on an agreement that would have resulted in significant pay rises and brought the nursery workers in line with other authority staff.

The strike follows Nottinghamshire nursery nurses successfully negotiating a major pay rise, with qualified staff earning up to 18,417 as part of a package which promises a career structure that rewards skills and commitment (News, 24 May).
