Animal magic is the key to children's reading habits

Children prefer to read books about animals and nature, a new study suggests.

The Booktrust poll found that more than half of children said animals were their favourite things to read about. A staggering 92 per cent of parents said they felt that reading books where animals are the main characters can help children make sense of human feelings, experiences and relationships.

The research, which coincides with the launch of Booktime 2010, where over 1.3 million books are given to reception-aged children this autumn, also revealed children's favourite animal book as The Gruffalo, followed by The Very Hungry Caterpillar and Peppa Pig. Visit www.booktime.org.uk.
