Away in a manger

Extend your project on babies to complement the season and link in to a birth story that all children can share, explains Anne O'Connor Activity 1

Activity 1

A-L Season's greetings

Planned learning intention

To identify and sort familiar images by category

Resources

Used Christmas cards

Step by step

* Ask the children to look through the cards and identify the kinds of things that are displayed on the fronts, for example, animals, birds, stars, candles, Father Christmas, stagecoaches, snowy scenes as well as images from the nativity. Children may also arrive at their own categories, for example, shiny pictures, pictures of real things, words and letters.

* Make posting boxes, say, from shoe boxes, with changeable labels, and let the children decide their own categories and devise their own posting games.
