A proposal to replace Glasgow's nursery school teachers with nursery nurses, now called child development officers, was discussed at a recent meeting between union members and council officials.
The council was not able to confirm or deny the plans. It is believed they would affect around 37 of the city's nursery teachers and save 370,000 a year.
A council spokesperson said, 'No decision has been taken on any measure and the unions have been fully consulted as part of the process. We are committed to providing essential frontline services, but will not compromise on achieving best value.'
Aileen Scullion, Glasgow chairperson of the teaching union EIS, said, 'My concern is that teachers in nursery schools are more highly qualified than other workers in the sector. We value child development officers, but the loss of teaching posts would be a very sore loss for the attainment and achievement of very young children.'
