Be more sociable

The cartoon accompanying the letter advocating the Montessori method of nursery education ('Let children set their own timetable', 31 October) showed a clock face as the Montessori environment and the numbers replaced with words such as 'group play'. In my experience of working in a Montessori establishment, 'play' is not a word used in any true Montessori setting. Children take part in 'work cycles' on an individual basis. Washing floors and polishing tables seemed to be favoured 'practical life' activities and there appeared to be a distinct lack of social activities and no place for role play or imaginary play, with no 'house corner', dressing up, sand tray, water tray or any activity to encourage social development.

Without this important area of the pre-school curriculum, I hardly think it is appropriate to be promoting Montessori establishments as suitable for preparing nursery children for school. In fact, children entering school after attending a Montessori pre-school are often unable to socialise with others and to take part in group activities, which are an essential part of school life.
