Believe if you wish

I read with interest the balanced article on whether Santa Claus should be part of Christmas in early years settings and if childcarers should always tell children 'the truth' about him ('The real thing?', 12 December). I agree that in multicultural settings the celebration of other cultures becomes as important as celebrating Christmas, so Santa could be excluded from some settings, if the staff wish. But at nursery, please do not confirm Santa's non-existence. Many parents may have found the story an important part of the magic of their own childhood and they may wish to continue the fantasy with their own children.

Besides, life is serious enough, and children grow up quickly enough. So let's at least allow them to develop their imaginations.
