Beware the box

This may sound like a silly question, but do any Nursery World readers know whether it is safe to use egg boxes in nurseries? The question came up when a new member of staff said, 'Don't you have to microwave egg boxes before the children use them?'

The question came up when a new member of staff said, 'Don't you have to microwave egg boxes before the children use them?'

I contacted the Food Standards Agency and they advised that you do microwave the egg boxes before use, but this doesn't guarantee anything and does not clarify whether young children should use egg boxes at all.

I have also spoken to the childcare advisor at our Early Years Development and Childcare Partnership, who didn't know either. I am now waiting for our Environmental Services office to get back to me on the question.
