Call for increase in national minimum wage

Public sector union Unison has called for an increase in the national minimum wage to 7.45 an hour by October 2010.

The union is urging the Low Pay Commission to resist demands from someindustry leaders to freeze the NMW and to help low-paid families andyoung people through the recession. General secretary Dave Prentis said,'The Government has bailed out the bankers who got us into this mess. But people at the bottom of the ladder also need a helping hand to cope.It would be madness to push vulnerable workers further into the red by afreeze to the national minimum wage.'
