Campaigners keep axe from two nurseries

Two nurseries threatened with closure have won a last-minute reprieve after a vigorous campaign by parents and children. Whizz Kids Pre-School at Ashford Community Centre, Ashford, and Rainbow Day Nursery at Sunbury Youth Centre were faced with the axe as part of Surrey county council's plans to close 18 youth and community centres.

A final decision had been due at a council meeting on 11 April, but on Friday the council said it was putting its plans on hold to give it more time to consider how to develop youth services in future.

Charlotte Grieves, owner of Whizz Kids, which runs four mornings a week and has 40 children on its books, said, 'It's great news. Everyone's done so much to help us.'
