Childcare practitioners enjoy their work despite all the drawbacks to the job in terms of poor pay, long hours and scant professional recognition. Fewer than one in ten wants to leave the childcare sector while many more either say that they are content with their current role or are ambitious to gain a more senior post.

Their attitude is summed up by a nursery manger from Scotland who says, 'In this job there is the opportunity to make a positive difference to the lives of children. In terms of pay we are undervalued and unrecognised.'

A pre-school supervisor on 7.51-10.00 an hour says, 'It is a very rewarding, challenging job, every day is different and the children are wonderful. The job allows me holiday time with my own family but the pay is shocking to run a pre-school, have so much responsibility, do the necessary out-of-hours work and manage eight members of staff and 51 children.'
