Case history: Building self-esteem

When eight-year-old Mark arrived at Claremont School a year ago he had low self-esteem, was hyperactive and hated going to school. His mother Beverley was told by his previous school that he would not socialise with other children. In fact, he had Asperger's syndrome, a form of autism, which has only recently been diagnosed. When Beverley viewed Claremont School she explained that Mark was sensitive to noise and had emotional and behavioural difficulties 'because I was worried how he would settle in'. Soon after he started at the school, he was referred to family worker and counsellor Kaz Duckworth and the process of raising his self-esteem got under way.

Beverley says, 'He now has a "pass-out" card which he can show the teacher if things become too much in the classroom. He can either go on a punch-bag, a trampoline, have a massage or some quiet time.

'It's been really helpful. Before, he wouldn't walk into a classroom by himself, he certainly wouldn't have been able to ask the teacher for some quiet time. He likes to know the support is their for him, he's more willing to have a go at school work and his concentration has improved. The school has been very supportive.'
