Case study

Louise has managed a two-family nannyshare for four years. The job has always had rather elastic conditions. Most of the time, for Louise, this flexibility has outweighed the disadvantages of being asked for favours in her hours and responsibilities. However, over recent months the job boundaries have become blurred to include a third family of friends. Two extra children have become a regular part of the school pick-up and afternoon hours. They do not get along well with the original children and Louise has to manage increasing amounts of squabbling and complaints of 'why are they here again!' Louise decides to address the issue of her contract, and the children's feelings, with the mothers of the first two families. They say that now that all the children are in nursery or school, they need to share the costs of employing Louise. They also want to re-negotiate how she uses her time when she has no children with her. They offer a combination of office work with one mother who runs her own business, and housecleaning.

Louise decides that she does not want this transformed job, and gives in her notice. She finds a courteous way to alert the mothers to the fact that their own children do not really like the children from the third family.
