Case study: Sedgemoor Manor Community Nursery and Infant School

For the past two years, the school has received Education Action Zone money to fund a Forest School within its grounds, but this term the nursery children have started making weekly trips to woodland leased by Bridgwater College, says nursery nurse Sharon Bonas. The nursery teacher and I alternate going with the children, who are enjoying the new experiences of using tools, playing games such as '1 2 3, where are you?', splashing in mud without having to worry and cooking over an open fire. Even going on the minibus was a daunting new experience for some of the children in the beginning.

I think Forest School builds confidence. We've seen over the years how children who are quite quiet become confident and take the lead, while the born leaders are prepared to take a step back and let the others lead.
