Changing childcare

In response to Beatrix Cambell about starting childcare from the view of the parent (To the Point, 5 January), as a mother of two who works in childcare I have seen both sides of this argument. When your children are babies you don't really care about Sure Start, private or state day nursery or even childminders. As a parent you look for a facility that will care for your bundle of joy. You want it to be local for your needs and, more important, at a price you can afford.

Just when you have the perfect job and daycare with wonderful staff, your child is old enough to go to school. Now you have new childcare issues.

First, most schools start children part- time. Then as they go full-time - well, 9am-3.30pm - you have to find before-school care, after- school care and holiday care.
