Anne (pictured left) left school without any qualifications and didn't know what she wanted to do. Her first child was born while she was still a teenager. Anne started to go to the local mother and toddler group and within a year she was asked to become an assistant. Local pre-school development workers encouraged Anne to train. 'They gave me the confidence I needed to go for the qualifications,' she says. Ten years on, she has NVQ Level 3 and is a pre-school manager with 70 children in her care. About three years ago she went along to the Sure Start management committee in Widnes and, she recalls, 'I just couldn't shut up!' Anne is now on the committee, writing business plans and applying for grants. She now plans to take a foundation course to work towards a degree in early years.
