The use of Bisphenol A plastics in baby bottles is to be banned in the European Union next year.
The potentially harmful chemical, which has been found to increase the risk of breast cancer in children, will no longer be used in the production of baby bottles from 1 March. The European Commission's decision follows calls from scientists in the US, Britain and Italy, who said such plastics are putting the public's health at risk (News, 14 April).
