Child safety online

More than 140 organisations, including Facebook, Microsoft and Google, have signed up to new standards to protect children online, as recommended in Tanya Byron's review.

They will cover instant messaging, chatrooms, other web-based servicesand search providers. The UK Council for Child Internet Safety will drawup standards that will ensure companies clearly state on their websiteswhat the rules are for using their site and what children can do if theysee something offensive there. They will also help parents to monitortheir child's internet use and explain how they can complain if they areuncomfortable about anything found online.
