Childbase staff visit African twin centre

Provision
Practitioners from the Childbase nursery chain have pledged their support for a charity helping children in South Africa after their week-long visit to a setting in Cape Town.

The trip saw Childbase twinned with the Cape Town Educare Centre, a setting that delivers childcare training to those living in an area of extreme social deprivation and poverty. Childbase took eight nursery practitioners, along with its CEO Mike Thompson, to help decide if the work undertaken by the charity Auntie would inspire the staff in each of the nursery chain's 39 settings.

Auntie was set up by Russell Ford, the former chief executive of Asquith Nurseries, to help run creches in South African townships and train childcarers (News, 5 November 2009). The aim is for the projects - which include sponsoring primary education, mentoring for children and vocational training to help young people into jobs - to become self-financing.
