Children are still held in detention centres

Children of asylum seekers are still being held at detention centres, despite a pledge by the coalition Government to end the policy.

Last week, a Pakistani woman, Sehar Shebaz, and her eight-month-old daughter were detained at the Dungavel immigration removal centre in Scotland.

After pressure from the Scottish government, Ms Shebaz and her baby were moved to Yarl's Wood Centre in Bedfordshire, before being deported on Saturday.

The Home Office has announced that children of failed asylum seekers will no longer be detained overnight at Dungavel.

Campaigners have described the move as a 'joke', as the children are still being detained in England.

Robina Qureshi, director of the Glasgow charity Positive Action in Housing, said, 'The coalition Government's policy to end detention in Scotland immediately is a joke. Those very same children are being driven hundreds of miles to be locked up in Yarl's Wood instead.'
