Children at risk of going hungry during the holidays if support fund not continued by Government

Children in more than a quarter of local authorities are at risk of going hungry in the school holidays if the Government doesn’t commit to extending the Household Support Fund (HSF) past September, warns a new report.

The Household Support Fund (HSF) was created by the previous government in 2021 to support families through the cost-of-living crisis with £1 billion of funding given to local authorities and devolved governments each year,

Most local authorities in England used the funding to prop up their local welfare schemes, under which they provide grants to residents to buy goods or pay for free school meals over the school holidays.

The fund is due to end on 30 September if the new Government doesn’t commit to extending it.

According to the End Furniture Poverty charity, 36 local authorities have already closed their local welfare schemes to support people with food, fuel and furniture in a time of crisis, while a further eight say their scheme will close on 1 October without additional Government funding.
