Children's services 'too low in priorities' for pay

The Government has been criticised by a senior early years advisor for seeming to put war before children's services.

Helen Moylett, senior director (early years) for the National Strategies, told last week's Positive Relationships conference organised by the Learning Trust, 'The Government can find money for the war in Iraq but can't find money for our most precious possessions, our children. That is the reality and we need to keep on pressurising them.'

She urged childcare practitioners to demand better pay and said that early years workers should continue raising the status of the profession by working towards higher qualifications. She said that low pay is 'a problem that is not going to go away. There is no quick fix, but we can continue to use the funding that is available and keep pushing for more.'
