'The Tailor of Gloucester'

(BBC Radio 4, 11.30am to 12 noon)

Beatrix Potter's tale of the poor tailor of Gloucester, who must make a coat of cherry-coloured corded silk for the Mayor of Gloucester to be married in on Christmas morning, is dramatised by Sarah Woods and features Miriam Margolyes.

'The Christmas Storykeepers'

(ITV 1, 11.50 to 1.15pm)

The animated adventures of four children on the run from persecution in Nero's Rome, who carry the story of the birth of Jesus to the whole world.

'Olive the Other Reindeer'

(Channel 4, 3.50 to 4.45pm)

Matt Groening's ('The Simpsons') cartoon tells what happens when Olive, a dog, hears the tragic news on the radio that Blitzen the reindeer has been injured and that Christmas may be cancelled. Olive misinterprets the bulletin and sets off to save Christmas with the help of her pet flea Fido.

'The Snowman'

(Channel 4, 4.45 to 5.15pm)

Another screening of Raymond Briggs' classic story, with memorable music by Howard Blake, about a boy who makes a snowman on Christmas Eve. During the night the snowman comes to life and whisks the boy off to the North Pole to meet a very important person.

'Ivor the Invisible'

(Channel 4, 5.15 to 5.45pm)

This new animated story by Raymond Briggs tells what happens when a boy called John wakes up one morning to find a big invisible something sitting on his bed. He quickly becomes friends with the giant, who he calls Ivor, but when he takes him to school the trouble really starts.

'I Love Christmas'

(BBC 2, 8.30 to 10pm)

For nostalgia lovers, a reminder of the golden days of Christmas when it always snowed, the pantomime was funny and the Christmas Number One single was worth waiting for.

Deborah Bull introduces the Royal Ballet's magnificent production of Tchaikovsky's ballet in which a girl is caught up in a Christmas dream with toys and sweets.

'Hamilton Mattress'

(BBC 1, 2.30 to 3pm)

Armed with an amazing sense of rhythm, Sludger the aardvark and his canny caterpillar chum Feldwick C Hackenbush set off in search of fame and fortune in this animated adventure for all the family.

Boxing Day - 26 December

'Come to Your Senses with Adam Hart-Davis'

(BBC 2, 11.10 to 11.50am)

The first of three science programmes for children which explore the human senses. This one focuses on seeing and hearing, investigating the weird world of optical illusion and why two ears are better than one. The other programmes, on 27 and 28 December at the same time, cover taste and smell, and touch and the phenomenon of synaesthesia - a condition where senses are crossed over and a person can taste a musical note or hear the wallpaper in a room.

'William and the Princess Goldilocks'

(BBC Radio 4, 11.30am to 12 noon)

Martin Jarvis performs another of Richmal Crompton's Just William stories. In this episode a visit to the pantomime leads William into a scenario worthy of the Marx Brothers.

'The Red Balloon'

(BBC Radio 4, 2.15 to 3.15pm)

A musical version of Albert Lamorisse's children's story about a lonely Parisian boy who is befriended by a stray balloon.

'Katya and the Nutcracker'

A young Russian girl has a wonderful fantasy on Christmas night involving a battle between her own toy Nutcracker and a band of mice led by the evil Mouseking.

'Ladybird, Ladybird'

(BBC Radio 4, 11 to 11.30am)

A mere glance at a Ladybird book has the power to whisk many adults back to their childhoods. To mark the 60th anniversary of Ladybird Books, Clare Jenkins tells the story of a publishing institution.

Brian Sibley presents a programme to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Walt Disney, revealing the man behind the myth as one who had his feet firmly on the ground and an eye on the main chance.
