'This is us' was the result of a partnership between Trojans, Arts Community Exchange (ACE) - an artist volunteering initiative, and Camberwell College of Arts. The artwork, created by children as young as four, included a collaborative piece featuring more than 400 intricately designed hands, large self-portraits, and African masks. The show was opened by the Mayor of Southwark, and pupils from the Oliver Goldsmith primary school gave a steel band performance.
The opening night also marked the official launch of ACE, which has sprung from the success of the Trojans Creative Arts Department, which began an artist volunteering programme in January 2001. The charity brings artists and art students together with Trojans' after-school schemes, other out-of-school providers and south London primary schools. ACE volunteers are developing and delivering creative activities with more than 400 children each week.
