Commissioner's boss is disputed

The children's commissioner for Wales has described as 'complete nonsense' the Government's plans for England's children's commissioner to have to answer to the education secretary rather than directly to Parliament.

Peter Clarke made the comment last week during a conference in London on England's forthcoming independent children's commissioner. He said, 'The children's commissioner should report to Parliament, not the education secretary. It is complete nonsense that the independent commissioner should have to go through the education secretary.' He called on the Government to set up a 'real independent office with teeth and powers'.

Mr Clarke, who has been children's commissioner in Wales since May 2000, stressed that it was crucial that the appointments process for the post was an 'open recruitment with children and young people at the heart of the process'.
