Councils consider acting on obesity

Parents who allow their children to become obese could be found guilty of neglect and social services could intervene, town hall leaders have warned.

The Local Government Association (LGA), which represents more than 400councils in England and Wales, has called for a national debate onwhether local authorities should intervene when the welfare of a childis at risk because of obesity.

The LGA warned that as childhood obesity becomes more of a problem, local authorities are likely to have to intervene more and more, byoffering help and advice to parents and keeping the welfare of childrenunder review.

Councillor David Rogers, LGA spokesperson on public health, said,'Councils are increasingly having to consider taking action whereparents are putting children's health in real danger. As the obesityepidemic grows, these tricky cases will keep on cropping up. Councilswould step in to deal with an under-nourished and neglected child, soshould a case with a morbidly obese child be different?'
