Count them out

While nanny registration looks elusive it's still a hot topic, and a recruitment agencies' organisation has stepped up its call to politicians for at least a list of excluded nannies. The Recruitment and Employment Confederation met with early years minister Catherine Ashton last month to talk about setting up a list of nannies who had mistreated children. Chairman of the REC childcare division Peter Cullimore said, 'No regulatory scheme is going to prevent every incident from happening, but we hope that this register will have a major effect in preventing many of the horror stories that we hear.' A nanny register is also among several items in the Regulation of Childcare Providers Bill presented in Parliament last month by Geraint Davies MP, who said, 'Abusive childminders may escape detection by becoming nannies, as nannies are currently unregulated.' The Bill is up for a second reading in June. Watch this space.
