Creativity dips in learning goal scores

Girls continue to do better than boys in every area of learning before they are five, the latest national results of the Foundation Stage Profile show. The statistics for 2005, published by the DfES last week, also show a small drop in the number of all children meeting or exceeding every one of the 13 assessment scales of the Foundation Stage curriculum.

The largest drop in achievement for all children was in creative development, down seven percentage points since last year.

Early years specialist Wendy Scott said, 'If people see the reception class as the beginning of Key Stage 1, children may have fewer opportunities to express themselves creatively. The question is about the way that the Foundation Stage curriculum is interpreted in reception and the extent to which children are able to demonstrate their abilities.'
