A support centre for primary school children in need of extra support opened last month at Cuiken House in Penicuik, Midlothian. Jointly funded by Midlothian Council and Children 1st, the working name for the charity the Royal Scottish Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Children, the centre's aim is to help get children back into mainstream education. Kathleen Donald, principal teacher at the centre, said the pupils who attended were often 'emotionally fragile'. She added, 'Part of our role is to work with other professionals to support them and their families to alleviate problems. We aim to build up their resilience so that they can return to school to reach their full potential and enjoy socialising with others.'
