Dangerous ideas

Further to Anne Ferries' comments about the child with a replica chainsaw (Letters, 3 April), are we to ban toy knives and pans from the home corner because they are dangerous 'replicas'? Are we to ban cars from the setting because people get hurt in them? Maybe the boy's father should be asked to bring in the safety gear he wears when using the chainsaw and explain how it has to be used safely and with the correct equipment.

Dangerous machinery is an everyday sight to children living on farms and in rural settings. Wouldn't it be better that children are taught to respect and use things correctly than having everything labelled as 'dangerous'? How will children learn if not given the chance, because we wrap them up in cotton wool all the time?
