Defend and extend

It is a pity that neither Nursery World nor the National Day Nurseries Association chose to speak to the Daycare Trust before commenting on our response to the Government's Education White Paper and its proposals for extended schools (News, 22 November), or it would have been clear what we are welcoming and proposing. Legislation enabling school governors to develop childcare and other community services is one way forward to build on existing provision and extend services which could be delivered by the private, public, voluntary or social enterprise sectors. For example, some schools already have partnerships with private nurseries and playgroups to provide early years care and education on the school grounds.

At the moment, many parents have no choice about childcare - it's either not available or too expensive. Schools are in every community and could act as a base for new affordable childcare provision and and as a beacon for existing serices.
