Degree snobbery

Further to the ongoing debate in Nursery World about dropping standards and qualifications, I agree that people should have relevant qualifications and be willing to undertake courses. However, I object to the idea that people need to have a degree and the rush to look down on anyone who does not have one. It is all well and good to be self-satisfied about having a degree and being better than 'just a nursery nurse', but if you are not able to deal with children on an everyday level, what is the point?

Qualifications work when they are appropriate to the job. If a degree student has no hands-on expertise, why should a graduate assume they will get a higher wage and a more senior position than those with better working knowledge?
