Disclosure costs

With regard to the current Criminal Records Bureau fiasco and its more than doubling of Disclosure check fees (News, 12 June), there is general acceptance now that anyone working in childcare in England and Wales should have an Enhanced Disclosure. But there is no guidance at all from the CRB about how long a Disclosure should last, or under what circumstances it should be renewed. Tinies branches have to renew them every two years, or after every break in childcare-related employment, whichever is the sooner. The biggest issue is 'portability'. Some matters will show up on a registered body's Disclosure that will not show up on the applicant's copy. In other words, it is not good enough to see an original copy of the applicant's Enhanced Disclosure.

Really, every nanny agency needs its own original, so this means that a nanny registering with four agencies has a bill of 116.

This is crackers.
