Resources

spoons, jugs, empty dishes, ice cubes, salt, rice, coffee granules, tea leaves, grated cheese, tomato puree

Step by step

* Prepare a table for four children to sit at, providing spoons, jugs and empty dishes for each child.

* Lay the table with small dishes, each containing a different substance. Remind the children that some of the substances are inedible, and therefore should not be tasted.

* Encourage the children to identify all the substances and their uses.

* Suggest that they predict what may happen when each of the items is added to water. Record their ideas.

* Allow them to experiment with the substance by pouring water from the jugs into the dishes and then adding a spoonful of a particular substance.

* As they discover what happens to the substances in water, introduce some new words such as dissolve, soluble, colouring and so on.

* Compare their predictions with the real outcomes.

* Encourage children to empty the dishes between experiments so they always start with clean water. Review what has been learned afterwards.
