A former doctor's surgery and housing office in Poplar, London, is among premises that will house Neighbourhood Nurseries following the allocation of grants totalling 3.4m by the New Opportunities Fund last week. The surgery will be converted into the 70-place Matchbox Day Nursery, featuring a covered outdoor play area and provision for 21 babies, with the help of a 139,931 grant to the Burdett Estate Playgroup. Other recipients include the Arndale Playgroup in Luton, Bedfordshire, awarded Pounds 12,205 to create 12 more places at its nursery in the Arndale shopping centre. Nursery manager Pam Swain said, 'Our parent and under-threes group is open every day for mutual support and a safe and stimulating atmosphere for the children to play in.'
