Domestic violence

A freephone national helpline offering assistance to women and families experiencing domestic violence has been set up with grants from the Government and the charity Comic Relief. The service, which is open 24 hours a day, offers emergency refuge accommodation, advice and translation services for the one in four women who experience domestic violence during their lives. The helpline was launched by comedian Dawn French, who said, 'Calling for help takes courage and we hope the new freephone helpline will help women take that vital first step to a safer life. That is why Comic Relief is donating its single largest UK grant to this project.' The helpline is run by Women's Aid, the domestic violence charity, and Refuge, which provides accommodation and support to 80,000 women and children every year. The helpline is on 0808 2000 247.
